Injury at Abandoned Colorado Factory + the Dangers of Urban Exploring
A man was recently injured while exploring an abandoned factory in Colorado, an incident that serves as a reminder of how dangerous it can be to participate in this type of activity.
What Happened at the Abandoned Colorado Factory?
The incident took place on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at the building that once housed the Great Western Sugar Company’s factory near Longmont, Colorado.
Law enforcement received a call from a 23-year-old man, whose identity has yet to be released to the public, just after 11 p.m. The man, who was exploring the abandoned sugar factory, told first responders that he had fallen “a significant distance” and was injured.
The significant distance turned out to have been roughly two stories, and the man was rescued after the arrival of members of the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, the Longmont Police Department, Mountain View Fire Rescue, and Boulder Rural Fire Rescue, arrived on the scene and discovered the injured man’s whereabouts using a drone.
Exploring Abandoned Places in Colorado is Highly Discouraged
This incident serves as a perfect example of why it is highly discouraged to explore abandoned properties like the old sugar factory near Longmont.
Places like this are, in many cases, not structurally sound, and no matter how safe and sturdy the buildings may seem, it’s extremely risky to attempt to walk around inside of them.
In addition, while seemingly abandoned and left to rot, places like these are typically still under ownership by someone, and entering properties like the sugar factory is technically illegal and considered trespassing.
In this particular case, the man who fell two stories at the sugar factory received facial and undisclosed limb injuries and was taken to the hospital as soon as his whereabouts were discovered by first responders.
