Glenwood Canyon Getting Speed Increase
For those who drive or have driven Glenwood Canyon and severely dislike the speed limit, your wish has been granted.
Currently, the speed limit through the 14-mile canyon is 50 MPH, but coming very soon, the speed will increase to 60 MPH as weather conditions allow.
But how will the canyon know if the weather turns bad?
CDOT crews have been installing what is known as a variable speed system through the canyon as well as elsewhere throughout the state. As conditions allow, you can now increase your speed to 60 going through the canyon. But, if the conditions worsen, the system will alert drivers to the lower speeds expected during snowstorms, etc.
Those traveling the canyon will see new signs, and throughout the canyon, there will be weather monitoring stations and additional closed-circuit cameras.
The signs and fiber optic cable are being installed now and by the November, everything should be ready and, after a 90 day testing period, we will start to see the speed increase, if there's no snow, that is.
