Here is a little bit of good news for I-70 travelers.

The Interstate 70 westbound deck in Glenwood Canyon is reopening on Friday. That means an end to the head-to-head detour that has been in place for the past several months.

Contrary to popular belief, the I-70 detour is not connected to the Grizzly Creek Fire that caused a two-week closure of the interstate through Glenwood Canyon. The I-70 Glenwood Canyon Surface Improvement Project has been a seven-month effort to improve road conditions on the westbound side between Hanging Lake and No Name.

The work began just before the COVID-19 health crisis and crews had to deal with various safety precautions that were put in place. Then, of course, was the Grizzly Creek Fire which closed the highway and created a delay in construction work.

Beginning Friday, motorists will resume travel on the westbound travel deck through Glenwood Canyon. You should notice a significant improvement in road conditions. However, there will still be some lane closures between Bair Ranch and No Name Tunnel

Meanwhile, all rest areas, river put-ins, and the bike path in Glenwood Canyon remain closed following damage from the Grizzly Creek Fire. According to CDOT, the closures allow law enforcement, emergency services, and CDOT to quickly evacuate I-70 and the canyon in the event of possible mudslides, debris flow, rockfall, and other hazards.
