This year's Perseid meteor shower could be one of the best!

There are plenty of shows and things to do this weekend. Local Jam 18 is this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at Edgewater Brewery. Saturday, Toto is at The Amp at Los Colonias Park. Perhaps the best show is the annual Perseid meteor shower and this year everything is lining up for a spectacular display! Aside from some wildfire smoke, conditions couldn't be more perfect. First, there's this weekend's weather forecast...

Friday Night
Mostly clear, with a low around 65.
Saturday
Sunny, with a high near 96.
Saturday Night
Mostly clear, with a low around 66.
Sunday
Mostly sunny, with a high near 96.
Sunday Night
Partly cloudy, with a low around 65.

Second, is this years moon phase that will provide an extra dark sky. “This year the moon will be near new moon, it will be a crescent, which means it will set before the Perseid show gets underway after midnight,” NASA meteor expert Bill Cooke. “The moon is very favorable for the Perseids this year, and that’ll make the Perseids probably the best shower of 2018 for people who want to go out and view it,” continues Cooke. Experts say too that during peak times this weekend's show will average about 60 to 70 meteors per hour!

Again, with each year's meteor shower where to take it in is critical. Anywhere outside of the metro lights will work. The darker, the better the view. The Grand Mesa may make for a better spot this year. There you can escape most of the valley wildfire smoke. Also, the school year is about to start. This may make for a fun family outing before summer's over.
