Too Much Of A Good Thing, Avalanche Warnings In Place
The Colorado ski season's record start is coming with a price.
These kinds of snow totals are exactly what everyone was hoping for. Skiers, the resort owners, everyone that makes a living or uses water from the Colorado River are praying this winter will bring much-needed relief to our drought-stricken part of the country. However, all this early heavy snowfall has the Colorado Avalanche Information Center folks on high alert. Did you know, in the last 10 years 276 people have died in avalanches in the US? 59 of them right here in Colorado.
No question, Colorado’s snow season got off to a fast start. Wolf Creek had folks on the slopes back in mid-October. That's a huge difference from last year when conditions remained mostly dry through much of December. Several feet of snow has already fallen in the higher elevations and there have been reports of several people injured from slides and avalanches this season.
