Officers with Colorado Parks and Wildlife have killed a bear believed to have been responsible for injuring a young East Orchard Mesa resident early Sunday morning.

During the overnight hours, wildlife officers observed a bear approaching a residence roughly a half-mile from the location of the attack.

The bear's carcass has been transported to the Wildlife Health Laboratory in Ft. Collins for a necropsy. According to a press release distributed earlier this morning, officers with the CPW say they are confident the bear is the same animal responsible for the attack.

The necropsy, along with DNA results will provide the confirmation, but we are confident we have the right bear. - Area Wildlife Manager Kirk Oldham.

Three traps placed by the CPW remain in place. Oldham adds, "We will leave all three traps in place for the time being out of an abundance of caution."

Officers with Colorado Parks and Wildlife say they will release the results of the necropsy when the information becomes available. They add CPA officers and USDA Wildlife Services will continue to monitor the area for additional bears.

In the meantime, Colorado Parks and Wildlife will hold a press conference today (Monday, May 14) at 1 p.m. at the Northwest Regional Office at 711 Independent Avenue in Grand Junction.
