Interstate 70 will be closed today (March 5) between the Clifton and Palisade exits after the Grand Junction Police Department's bomb squad was called out to remove old dynamite found at an area residency.

The Grand Junction Bomb Squad was called out to remove several pounds of dynamite that was stored on a property in the 3800 block of G-7/10 Rd.

Bomb squad technicians will utilize methods that will help minimize the chance of an explosion, but there is still a possibility of that the dynamite could detonate. If the dynamite does detonate, there is concern that the blast could cause rocks from the Bookcliffs to dislodge and spill on the interstate.

The detour route for I-70 drivers will utilize Hwy 6 between the Palisade and Clifton exits.

Crews estimate that I-70 will reopen around 4:30 PM.
