COVID-19 Is Third Leading Cause of Death In Colorado In 2020

So far in 2020, COVID-19 is the third leading cause of death in Colorado, but not by much.

According to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, as of July 27 there had been 1,377 reported deaths due to COVID-19. Close behind, however, is chronic lower respiratory diseases with 1,363 deaths, and cerebrovascular disease which has claimed 1,136 lives. Number six on the list of Colorado deaths is Alzeheimer's Disease with 1,128 deaths and 1,124 deaths due to unintentional injuries.

The two leading causes of death so far this year in Colorado are cancer, 4,138 deaths, and heart disease, responsible for 4,095 deaths. Rounding out the top 10 causes of death in Colorado are suicide at #8 with 580 deaths, diabetes with 563, and chronic liver disease, which is responsible for 527 deaths.

Of course, these numbers are fluid and constantly changing, but it gives us a good idea of what is taking place across the state. The current numbers from CDPHE show more than 1,700 deaths in Colorado due to COVID-19.

The numbers tell us a couple of things. Number one, a lot of people are dying as a result of COVID-19. The threat is real. Secondly, what we can see is that we are facing other health concerns that are just as serious. Not all cancer deaths are preventable, but some are. By the same token, not all heart disease deaths are preventable, but some could be if people made healthier lifestyle choices.

At the end of the year, it will be interesting what the final numbers will be in regards to Colorado deaths in 2020. There's no doubt, COVID-19 will be one of the leading causes of death in the state.
