However, in the near future, Rosie won't be the only tarantula that Butterfly Pavilion patrons will be able to get up close and personal with as it has been announced that a new eight-legged friend will be joining the famous Rosehair.
Colorado's Butterfly Pavilion Welcomes a New Tarantula
As mentioned above, Colorado's famous Rosie is known by its common name the Chilean Rosehair tarantula, as well as the scientific name of Grammostola rosea.
The Butterfly Pavilion's newest tarantula shares the same genus as Rosie but is a slightly different species. The new tarantula is known by its scientific name Grammostola pulchripes as well as its common name, the Chaco Golden Knee.
Like Rosie, the Grammostola pulchripes is considered a new world tarantula, meaning its origins lie in the Americas and in this particular case, primarily comes from Paraguay and Argentina.
Both of these new world species are typically docile and don't bite as their first line of defense but rather kick urticating hairs off of their abdomen when they feel threatened.
While the spiders are technically venomous, unlike their old-world counterparts, a bite is comparable to a bee sting to a human and even in the rare occurrence that one might bite a human, the venom is relatively harmless.
Along with the initial story announcing the arrival of the new tarantula, the Butterfly Pavilion is also looking for help naming the spider.
