The fire was so massive that it took numerous days to extinguish the flames fully, and now, roughly 20 days later, the man whom police believe is responsible for the arson has been taken into custody.

Arrest Made in January Colorado Fire

On January 21, 2026, it was announced that police had arrested 38-year-old Tony Becerra in connection with the massive fire that burned what were to become the Harker Heights apartments in the Denver suburb of Aurora at the beginning of the month.

However, this would not be the first time that Becerra found himself behind bars, as he has a long history with drugs and mental issues.

Who is Colorado’s Alleged Arson, Tony Becerra?

Following his arrest, it was revealed that Becerra’s sister had spoken about her brother’s mental issues in the past, stating that he “sees and hears things” and, alluding to his drug problem, stated that “he is not going to stop until police kill him.”

Becerra was arrested for arson on January 13, but was previously jailed for exhibiting mental issues, shoplifting, and assault.

It was also made public that Becerra was once falsely accused of being homeless due to the fact that he, according to the Aurora Police Department, was “believed to be staying in downtown Denver in a homeless camp to get drugs.”
