The Colorado Mesa University football Mavericks continue preparing for their second season under Head Coach Russ Martin. One of the big questions going into the season opener September 7th against Menlo College is who will be the Mavs' starting quarterback.

Senior Jason Haferman, who went 3-3 in six starts for the Mavericks last season is back. He's being challenged by a pair of redshirt freshmen. Aric Kaiser, 6-1 200 lbs, from Broomfield, Colorado transferred to CMU from the University of Nebraska Kearney, where he had been recruited by Mavs coach Russ Martin. Kyle Duran is the other redshirt freshmen, out of Chandler, Arizona, 6-0, 205 lbs. He was on the Mavericks' roster last season, so he was able to learn the Mavs' new offensive system, even though he never played in a game.

Who is going to win the starting spot has yet to be determined, but with the first game less than two weeks away, it won't be long until we know the answer.

From all accounts, the Mavs backfield is going to be loaded this season, and the wide receiver position should be the best it's been in years. If things come together at the quarterback position, this is a Mavericks team that could  score some points, and be a lot of fun to watch this season.

You can see the Mavericks practice most afternoons on the practice field just west of the Maverick Center.
