For those who have lived in Colorado since at least the mid-1990s, names like Peter Forsberg and Joe Sakic serve as reminders of the infancy of the state’s biggest hockey team, the Colorado Avalanche, and how, in its first year of being a team, it won the Stanley Cup.

When the team was officially introduced to Colorado as part of the National Hockey League in 1995, the Colorado Avalanche won the highest honor in the league, the Stanley Cup, with the help of players like Peter Forsberg, Joe Sakic, Patrick Roy, and Adam Foote, and on December 11, 2025, some of those players attended the game, while others checked in remotely.

Legendary Colorado Avalanche Players Attended Colorado Avalanche Game

On Thursday, December 11, 2025, thousands of Colorado Avalanche fans filled the seats at Ball Arena in Denver to watch the Colorado Avalanche take on the Florida Panthers. However, this particular game was different than any other that would take place in 2025, as prior to the game, a special ceremony took place that featured numerous members of the team from the past.

The short ceremony honored what many consider the original team, the 1995-1996 Colorado Avalanche players, who consisted of appearances from legendary players like Peter Forsberg, Joe Sakic, and others who were once part of the Quebec Nordiques team prior to moving to the Mile High City to win the Stanley Cup in 1996.

In addition, the Stanley Cup itself was in attendance, placed on a table in the middle of the ice rink while the players gathered around it on a burgundy carpet that made a circle around it.

The Avalanche would end up winning the game against the Panthers with a final score of 6-3, thanks to goals scored by Nathan MacKinnon, Sam Malinski, Brock Nelson, Gavin Brindley, Artturi Lehkonen, and captain Gabriel Landeskog.
