For the last several days, our cable box at home has been all jacked up. The picture would freeze for a few seconds, and then the box would go into reboot mode. This would happen several times a day and got very irritating. Never mind that TV shows that were set to record were no longer recording. So today, in comes the cable guy - and fortunately it was not anyone resembling Jim Carrey. Turns out the cable going to the box was completely toasted, apparently due to some recent lightning activity, according to the cable guy.Thankfully, we got a new box and the problem was solved. But, it got me to thinking about the power and destruction of a bolt of lighting. Here's some videos of lighting strikes that will make you jump even though you are expecting them. The last one shows the amazing phenomenon of upward lighting. What's really cool in all of these is seeing the strikes in slow-motion.
