A new Colorado law could require either snow tires or chains on all non-commercial vehicles through the snowy months to make our roads safer but will it? The measure has already passed the House and will be debated in the Senate today.

The bill basically says that regardless of weather conditions all vehicles need to have their tires equipped for snow conditions from Nov. 1 to May 15 or face fines.

Now I'm not saying you should pack 15 people into a minivan with bald tires and try to make it to a Broncos football game in a snow storm. I just don't think making some law about tires and chains will make our roads any safer.

Last November I drove to Denver through a snow storm. By the time I got to Vail the roads were snow packed and traffic was down to just one lane.

I was passed by a white Hummer that was doing about 45 to 50 mph. I went about a quarter of a mile to find that white Hummer in the ditch. It had good tires and four-wheel drive and that didn't keep them from falling off the road.

They went into the ditch because the driver was an idiot who though he was in some big four wheel drive and could do 50 mph in a snow storm.

So, what do you think? Will passing a new law about snow tires and chains keep our roads safer or just cost the average person more money to drive on Colorado roads?
