What Colorado Halloween Was Like in the 90s
I was born and raised in Colorado. In fact, despite the fact that I've been to 49 of our 50 states (I'm missing Alaska), I've spent all 35 years of my life as a Colorado resident.
However, things have certainly changed over the years. When I was a kid growing up in Eagle, Colorado, my friends and I would stay outside riding our bikes, rollerblading, or doing some sort of activity until the streetlights came on, at which time we knew it was time to head home.
Growing up in that area, Halloween was my favorite holiday, and my friends and I had a really good time celebrating it as kids.
First of all, we would do what all the kids in that era did and go from house to house, unaccompanied by any adults, in our costumes, begging for candy. I guess the more widely-known term is 'trick or treating.'
Anyway, growing up in that area, we were conditioned to stay warm, as the climate was not what you would call 'tropical.' So, we designed our costumes, even at the elementary school age that we were, around jackets, hats, gloves, and warm boots in preparation for the arctic temperatures we were about to face.
Then, after going through our fairly small neighborhood in the fairly small town of Eagle, Colorado, we would return home, change into different costumes, and revisit the homes we had already been to in order to get more candy.
No, we were not the most ethical when it came to getting free candy, but who is?
