The History Behind the Mahany House aka Sagebrush House in Fruita

This is the history behind the Grand Valley's Mahany House in Fruita. The Mahany house was built in 1906 and is now the Sagebrush House, a vacation rental.

The Mahany house was built in Fruita in 1906. That was over 100 years ago and the house is still standing. The Mahany house was one of the nicer homes in Fruita during the early 20th century and is still on the corner of Pabor and Mesa, according to the Historical Photos of Fruita & Western Colorado Facebook.

The Mahany family moved to Fruita in the 1880s and Albert Bradford Mahany started a concrete block factory. According to the Historical Photos of Fruita & Western Colorado Facebook, many houses (including the Mahany house) and others building in Fruita are made up of concrete blocks molded to look like chiseled stone because of Albert Mahany. There are over a dozen of the concrete block buildings in Fruita.

Some of the other homes in Fruita that are made of 'patent stone' are the Phillips/Stonehaven house on Mesa Street and the Turner House on the corner of Pabor and Cherry, according to the Historical Photos of Fruita & Western Colorado Facebook.

The picture below was taken in 1913, while the picture above was taken in 2012. The Mahany house still looks the same and is now the Sagebrush House. The Sagebrush House in Fruita is now a vacation rental.
