This is Written on Tiny Plaque on Grand Junction Colorado’s Riverside Parkway

Chances are you've seen this dedication plaque posted on the wall along the Riverside Parkway on the 5th Street overpass in Grand Junction. It's kind of small, and hard to read when you're doing 40 miles per hour. What exactly does it say?

Hard to Spot When Doing 40 MPH Through Grand Junction

This has been bugging me for a while. I use this part of the Riverside Parkway every day. If you travel this route, you've probably caught a glimpse of it hundreds of times.

The plaque is posted just left of the stoplight where 5th street heading north exits to meet the parkway heading west. Confused? Check out the picture above. The photo, facing west on the parkway, has an arrow indicating the plaque's position.

Can't Stop to Read It

As you can see, the plaque is nowhere near a stopping point or parking area. You can only see it as you drive west down the parkway. At roughly 24" X 12" in size, it can easily go unnoticed. Unless you're Superman, there's no way you're going to be able to make out the writing as you pass by at 40 MPH.

As you can see, the plaque is exactly what you'd expect - a dedication plaque listing completion dates and a few city officials. The members of the city council, the City Manager, and the Public Works Director have their names listed.

Has The Parkway Really Been Around That Long?

I was surprised to discover the completion date for the Riverside Parkway listed as Summer 2008. How time flies. If somebody told me the parkway was completed only four years ago, I would have easily believed it. I would have never guessed it's been so long since its completion.

There's no need for you to slow down to a crawl to see this plaque. For that matter, you don't need to park at the Botanical Gardens and make the walk up the overpass. The photo above says it all.
