There’s a saying that goes something like “Just when you thought you’ve heard it all…..” And if I were a betting person, I’m sure others will wonder something very similar to that statement after reading this story.

04/18/13: Grand Junction Police have arrested a man believed to be the driver of a car that side-swiped a police car on Wednesday.

On Thursday, officers booked 33-year-old Karl Carothers into the Mesa County Jail on charges including second-degree assault, vehicular eluding, reckless driving, and leaving of an accident.

Police received a tip Thursday morning, and that tip led detectives to the orange PT Cruiser involved in Wednesday's incident. The vehicle was parked at a residence in the 800 block of Elm Avenue.

Additional witness information and evidence helped detectives identify Carothers as a suspect, who returned to the residence where detectives found the car. Officers spotted him in an alley behind the house and took him into custody without incident.

04/17/13: The Grand Junction Police Department is investigating an assault on a police officer and the prisoner he was transporting, after a witness said a driver intentionally side-swiped the officer’s police car.

At about 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, officers responded to a report of a reckless driver speeding down North Avenue and cutting off other drivers. Witnesses said the driver stopped in the Kmart parking lot, then headed south on 28 ½ Road.

Officers spotted the vehicle at a convenience store on 28 ½ Road. After spotting the officers, the suspect allegedly jumped into his vehicle and headed south on 28 ½ Road at a high rate of speed before turning west onto Ute Avenue. Officers decided not to pursue the suspect.

While driving on Ute Avenue, the suspect came up behind another Grand Junction Police officer who was transporting a prisoner in the 1200 block of Ute Avenue. A witness reported the suspect intentionally ran into the side of that officer’s patrol car, scraping the side and knocking off the side mirror.

Neither the officer nor the prisoner was injured.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, 6 feet tall with a thin build, driving an orange PT Cruiser with chrome accents.

If anyone has information about this incident, they can call the Grand Junction Police Department at 242-6707 or Crimestoppers at 241-STOP.
