I hate litterbugs! Having lived and worked in several cities over the past couple of decades, Wichita, Topeka, KC, and now Junction, it doesn't seem to matter, I see the evidence of their presence, those that think it's ok to toss their trash out, whenever and wherever, they feel like it.

It's nice to know that I'm not alone in my frustration. The online "official" Top Ten website agrees. #7 on the list of Pet Peeves is "people that throw trash from their car windows as they drive."

Here are a couple comments from the Top Ten site; "Trash makes me depressed. Littering is just plain selfish. I get joy from seeing the natural world undisturbed. Makes me crazy to think that people feel entitled to discard their stuff and expect someone else to take care of the mess."

"I hate that, if anyone riding with me threw trash out the window, I would pull over and make that person get out to pick up what was thrown."

In my three months of residence in Junction, I've witnessed it a couple times.  It took everything I had to restrain myself from pulling my truck over, jumping out, and saying something to a guy that discarded a paper cup at a major intersection just a couple days ago.

These pictures I've posted were taken at a couple intersections here in town.  Places you may drive by every day on your way to and from work. It's obvious that there's going to be those that think it's ok to discard their trash, and yes that means a cigarette butt, out the car window.

That leaves the rest  of us to clean up the mess. There are ways to help. The City of Grand Junction is a place to start. Most social and civic organizations have volunteers ready to pitch in too. It will take all of us working together to keep our city clean.

This great city is surrounded by incredible beauty. The Grand Mesa, The Monument, mountains, rivers, and other amazing wonders of nature. The pride we take in these must also apply to our city. It's time to stand up to those that think the world is their trash can. If each of us can influence just one other to not throw out their trash, that's a step in the right direction. Let's keep Junction clean.
