The 2014 NFL Draft in now in the books and it might have taken until the 7th round but Michael Sam did get drafted. The first openly gay player to be drafted in the NFL made big news for that fact and for dropping so far in the draft but I think he landed in the right place.

I don’t really care about his personal life and you shouldn’t either. He is a grown man and can make whatever choices he wants to but he is the SEC defensive player of the year and that is whom the Rams drafted.

Michael Sam is a good football player but he is really a one-dimensional player. He has great pass rusher skills but I wouldn’t send him into coverage in today’s NFL. That is why I think he landed in the right place.

The Rams took DT Aaron Donald out of Pittsburgh, a very solid player with a ton of upside, with the 13th pick over all in the first round. When you add him to Chris Long and Robert Quinn the Rams defensive down linemen just got much better. Those are three starters on any team in the NFL.

Now, you add Michael Sam and the Rams just might have the best front four in the game. Sam isn’t going to cover anyone but he doesn’t need to. He will need to just get after the Quarterback and when you look at the other three men on that line those opportunities will be there.

Last season the Rams had 53 sacks for third best in the NFL and the team just added two more pass rushers. Playing in the NFC West the Rams need pass rushers, which should help improve their pass defense, which was 9th last season in the league.

Michael Sam is not the type of player that could go to a very poor defensive team and turn them around. Going to a team that already has great depth on that side of the ball will allow him to be more of a specialize guy who can be a great impact for the Rams this season.

I think had Sam been drafted by the likes of Cleveland or Jacksonville he would probably end up a bust but going to St. Louis will allow him to play on passing downs and will give the Rams a very solid front four who could change the out come of a few games next season.
