Thursday morning at 5am the ladies American ice hockey team will go for the gold medal in Sochi. The ladies beat Sweden 6-1 to earn a trip to the gold medal game. They will take on their archrivals Team Canada who beat our ladies in-group play 3-2 earlier at the Sochi Olympics.

Our ladies have played very well at the Olympics with the best scoring efficiency and best power play of the eight teams in the tournament. Team USA is lead by Kendall Coyne, Brianna Decker and Amanda Kessel (yes her brother is Phil Kessel on the men’s team) in scoring.

In goal Jessie Vetter was 2-1 and Molly Schaus won her only start with a shutout stopping all ten shots. Team USA has only faced 65 shots on goal in the four games they have played and they will need to continue that if they want to win gold Thursday morning.

Team Canada has been the beast of the north winning the last three Olympic gold medals. The last time Team USA won the gold at the Olympics was in 1998 in Nagano, Japan. The American women have two silver and a bronze medal over the 3 Olympic games and want to add gold to their resume.

If team USA wants to win Thursday morning they will need to put a ton of pressure on team Canada’s defense by keeping the puck in their end. They will also need to take advantage of the power play when they get one. Team Canada like team USA doesn’t take a lot of penalties so when they get that chance they need to score. I think our ladies can win this but they can’t chase the game they need to control it.
