Junction Albertsons Closing In March
A Junction neighborhood Albertsons is closing soon. Corporate officials said the Albertsons store at 1830 N. 12th St. will be closing its doors by March 20.
According to The Daily Sentinel three other area stores, including the Redlands Albertsons at 2512 Broadway that is becoming a Safeway, are in the process of being remodeled. According to Kathy Holland, Safeway spokeswoman the remodels of the existing Safeway's would be complete by Feb. 22 and the former Albertsons on the Redlands would be finished at the beginning of March, and that the stores would have grand reopenings at that time.
Approximately 70 employees at the store that is closing will be affected.
“It wasn’t performing as well as the other stores in the area,” Kathy Holland, Safeway spokeswoman, said in reference to the 12th Street Albertsons. She said the decision didn’t necessarily have anything to do with the new City Market that opened less than a mile away on the corner of 12th Street and Patterson Road last March.
The impact will be felt by college students living in the area. That location was the closest grocery store to the CMU campus. No word yet who may occupy the building after the March closing.
