Colorado Mesa University's theater and dance programs are gearing up for the 2020 season. What steps will they take to comply with social distancing standards?

I received a press release yesterday from Colorado Mesa University. The CMU Theatre's 2020-2021 season has been designated "Suit Up!" The season will get underway with a production of the children's musical "Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed: the Rock Experience."

I must apologize in advance, but it seems I'm not familiar with this one. According to the press release, the production is based on the children's book by Mo Willems. It revolves around Wilbur the naked mole-rat. Wilbur has a certain penchant for clothing, and his passion turns the community upside down.

According to the Colorado Mesa University web page, the play runs September 17 through 26, 2020. It appears live productions are making their way back to Grand Junction. In the case of Robinson Theatre, productions are returning to indoor venues. How will they accommodate audiences while observing current restrictions?

The press release from Colorado Mesa University states the venue will run performances with limited seating capacity to allow for social distancing between parties and between the audience and the cast.

A second option is available. In the case of Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed: the Rock Experience, the cast will film the show for viewers to stream in their homes and at District 51 schools.

What about the other productions, concerts, and dance recitals coming to Robinson? The press release from Colorado Mesa University says:

Given the uncertainty around public gatherings for the coming months, each production during this season will be given individual consideration; therefore, season tickets will not be offered this year. Patrons are encouraged to visit the CMU theatre website and opt-in to receive email announcements for individual ticket sales. Additionally, patrons who are interested in supporting the theatre are encouraged to join the Bravo Club, the theatre's donor circle. A new level of membership has been added, allowing those who wish only to stream digital productions into their homes this year to pledge their support and to view each of the six main stage productions.

The show must go on, and it looks as if that is precisely what will happen with the cast and crew at CMU's Robinson Theatre. Whether it be by in-person attendance or live stream, one way or another you'll have a chance to catch these awesome shows. Regardless of what unfolds around us, our culture must go on. Now more than ever we need to support the arts. Stay in touch with the fantastic shows and performances scheduled for Fall 2020 at Robinson Theatre.
