Registration is underway for National Night Out 2013, which is scheduled for Tuesday, August 6.

National Night Out is “America’s Night Out Against Crime,” and promotes crime prevention through police, community, and neighborhood partnerships. This year marks the 30th annual event nationwide.

The first National Night Out took place on Tuesday, August 7, 1984. That first year, 2.5 million Americans took part across 400 communities in 23 states. National Night Out now involves more than 37 million people and 15,000 communities from all fifty states, U.S. Territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide.

Each year, various neighborhoods host events that help neighbors build camaraderie and familiarity with each other. It is also designed to send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are willing to fight back against crime.

For this year’s event, all Grand Junction neighborhoods that register their National Night Out events with the Grand Junction Police Department will be eligible to have an officer visit them during the event. Each officer will provide safety information and answer questions.

Members of the Grand Junction Fire Department will also visit neighborhoods throughout the city that evening.

To register, visit www.gjcity.org/NationalNightOut. Links will be available to help people find which neighborhoods have registered, ideas for what to do during a neighborhood event, as well as photo albums from previous years.
