Grand Junction Music Store Closing – How Good are the Deals?

After 39 years of service to Grand Junction and Western Colorado, Back Porch Music is going out of business. Their GOOB sale is underway. How good are the deals?

As I mentioned in my last post, I purchased my first new instrument from Dwight at Back Porch Music back in 1989. It was a Peavey Foundation bass with a tobacco sunburst finish. I played it for years. Unfortunately, like a complete dummy, I sold it. I'd give just about anything to have it back.

Since then my purchases from Back Porch have included an army of microphones, mic stands, drum machines, recording machines, miles worth of speaker and mic cables, a handful of Peavey wedge monitors, a Peavey Black Widow 4X10 speaker cabinet (best cabinet I ever owned), and a number of bass amps.

Well, after 39 years, it's time for Dwight to retire and close up the shop. The Going Out of Business sale is underway. I stopped by to check out the deals. Are there bargains to be found? You decide. Here are a few examples.

I can't help but think the truly great deals are to be found in the acoustic guitar room. Years ago Dwight added a temperature and humidity controlled area for the acoustics. Back Porch carries some excellent guitars, including one of my favorite brands, Taylor.

Most of my guitar playing friends are big fans of Taylor. To be honest, I didn't know the company made instruments in this price range. Most models to cross my path were in the $1,200 range. The model below is normally $499, but has been marked down 50 bucks to the price of $449. I haven't a clue if that's a great deal or not, but it seems like a very reasonable price for a Taylor.

Back Porch Music has a handful of 7-string guitars in stock. They've been marked down, too. I'm not sure why they make 7-string guitars. Most players I know can't handle six.

Right now, my primary interest involves accessories. Most of us could use more speaker and mic cables. At this time (July 10), accessories are only marked down ten percent. I have reason to believe they'll be marked down further as the sale progresses. It might be wise for me to hold off.

If you're a beginning player, there's a selection of very inexpensive novice instruments. They're always affordable, and with the sale, you'll probably find them to be very reasonably priced. This might be the perfect time to buy if you're looking to get started on a new musical adventure.

It appears as though the best discounts are on amps. The percentage of markdowns seem to be greater than other products. This looks like a pretty good deal on a new amp.

The prices seem right. If you're looking to embark on a new musical chapter in your life, you might want to swing by Back Porch Music. According to the owner, he's sold more equipment in the six days since the sale was announced than he did in the entire month of June. In other words, the really good deals won't stick around for long. If something catches your eye, you would be wise to pounce.
