Fireworks won't light the sky in Fruita this year but the ground display, in the form of a giant party, may be almost as good.

The City of Fruita and the Lower Valley Fire Department determined the fire danger is significant enough firefighters would be spending more time fighting fires sparked by fireworks than actually launching them.

Instead of fireworks this year, there is going to be a giant party with food and live entertainment at Fruita Civic Center Park on July 3.

People attending the event are encouraged to dress themselves and their bicycles in their best patriotic clothing and decorations and ride to the park between 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. Every rider and bicycle decorated will be awarded a prize. Plus, the most patriotic bike will win a special prize.

Grant-A-Wish will be serving free hot dogs (donations gladly accepted) and live entertainment featuring Wave 11 and The Oxymorons will start at 6 p.m. There will also be sno-cones, cotton candy and other goodies for sale throughout the evening.

Youngsters will find plenty of fun jumping around inside the big inflatable bounce house. The event will end with a 'Color Explosion' finale at 9 p.m.
