National Weather Service Issues Flood Advisory for parts of the Gunnison River.

We knew it was coming. For several weeks local authorities have been warning of looming high water levels. Rapidly rising temperatures have accelerated the melting process. Suddenly, Colorado's record snowpack is converting to water at an alarming rate.

Although the Colorado River is running high, the National Weather Service sees a greater threat from the Gunnison. An updated post from Thursday afternoon, June 6th shows the Gunnison currently at 10.7 feet. At that level, the river has officially surpassed 'bank full' stage. Any additional water will force water onto the floodplain. For those that live in and around the Gunnison River flood plain should keep a close eye on the water level and monitor the NWS website for any additional alerts or possible warnings. Orchard Mesa and Whitewater are officially in the current advisory area.

Again, the Colorado River is rising, but not currently under any advisories. Be advised that The Colorado River near Loma is approaching the 'bank full'. Any significant additional water flow could push the river beyond its banks. The NWS is advising everyone to stay away from any flooded areas and to not walk near the river bank.
