If you are a dog lover you're going to love the story about Dexter, the western Colorado dog who walks on two legs.

Sure, you've seen trained dogs performing on television walking on two legs in a stage act, but, this is completely different. For Dexter, walking on two legs is a way of life.

I absolutely love dogs and I have a special place in my heart for special needs dogs, so the story of Dexter is extra special to me. When I saw the story on 9 News, my heart was instantly warmed. It's also a story I hope will inspire many others to rise above their disability, just like Dexter.

What Happened to Dexter?

Dexter is a 6-year-old Brittany Spaniel living in Ouray - and he walks on his hind legs. It's not because he's trying to show off or because he's part of some stage show, but rather, it's out of necessity.

About five years ago when Dexter was just a puppy, he got in the road and a truck ran over his front legs. It looked like it would be the end of Dexter. But, the family, which had lost two dogs in two years, didn't want to lose another one, so they gave him a chance and took him to a veterinarian in Montrose. What happened next was amazing.

One leg had to be amputated, surgical pins were put in the other leg, and several surgeries and rehabilitation followed. Dexter then started doing something nobody expected. Instead of walking on three legs, he started walking on his hind legs. Eventually, that was pretty much the only way he was walking and now he's become a TikTok sensation.

Dexter Is An Inspiration

I have to give Dexter's family kudos for not giving up on him following his injury and for being willing to pay the price. I know dog surgeries are not cheap. And I'm grateful to them for sharing their story with the world because Dexter is an inspiration to everyone who hears the story.

Many people in the world are struck with disabilities beyond their control, and I never cease to be amazed at the ones who refuse to live in defeat. Like Dexter, they find a way to rise above their misfortune so they can still live life and enjoy it to the fullest, in spite of their struggle. I know it's not always easy, but these people have the resolve to make the best of their situation rather than wallow in self-pity. These people, just like Dexter, inspire me to be a better person and to live my life with a greater appreciation for the health and good fortune I've been blessed with.
