For the third time in as many years a Colorado State Senator will try to get those pesky stop light cameras banned. Senator Scott Renfroe has introduced a bill to ban cameras at stoplights in Colorado claiming it is just a money grab for the state.

This isn’t just a money grab but I think a violation of our Constitutional rights and they should be banned. Some will say they help fight against reckless driving but do they really? If that was the case no one would ever speed through a stoplight ever again and we all know that isn’t the case.

The fact is this is a money grab by the state and does away with due process that our Constitution guarantees. The police can’t be every where so they use these cameras to fine people they think are speeding or driving recklessly.

The camera just takes a picture of you going through the intersection and the state sends you a ticket in the mail. Do we know if the camera has been worked on or if the information is correct? No we do not and the state doesn’t have to prove anything. You get the ticket and must pay it before a certain date or be held in contempt of court. Where is the due process in that?

The sad part is that most people just pay the fine and move on. The ticket tells you if you pay the fine by a certain date no points will be accessed to you driver’s license so people just send the money in to the state. Which has created a great revenue stream in Colorado and trust me there are some who want more cameras not less.

I’m not sure if this will pass on the third time but I hope it does. The American people deserve the right to not be fleeced by our government.
