When the CMU Mavericks scored on a 26 yard pass play from Jason Haferman to Robert Felberg with 9:45 to play in the 3rd quarter to go up 36-20 over New Mexico Highlands, it appeared they were headed for a second straight win. But, the Cowboys scored the game's final 20 points including the game winning touchdown with less than two minutes to play to send Highland to a 40-36 victory over the Mavericks, and send Saturday's  homecoming crowd home disappointed.

Mavericks' Running Back Jake Cimolino carried the ball 32 times for 233 yards and two touchdowns but it wasn't enough. It was the first time a Maverick ball carrier had topped 200 yards in a game since Bobby Coy did it in 2008.
Jason Haferman, playing for the second consecutive week in place of freshman Deke Cisco had his best day as a Maverick completing 15 of 31 passes for 214 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Highlands quarterback threw for 417 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Cowboys.

The Mavericks drop to 1-3 on the season, 1-2 in RMAC play and will be on the road next Saturday against Western New Mexico in Silver City, New Mexico. The Mustangs defeated Colorado School of Mines 54-28. In another RMAC contest, Chadron State defeated Adams State 23-21.
