How You Watch the Annual Climb Up Independence Monument In 2021
The Mesa County Search and Rescue Technical Rescue Team is getting ready to raise the American Flag with the 31st annual climb up Independence Monument. Here's how you can be on hand to witness this awesome event.
Each year climbers make their way up to Western Colorado's Independence Monument. This year, a total of 15 people, consisting of ten Search and Rescue members and five guests, will make the climb.
How To Observe
Would you like to witness this event? If so, where do you need to be and when do you need to be there? This year's flag-raising will happen between 11 a.m. and noon on Sunday, July 4, 2021.
Where To Find the Best Views
According to the Mesa County Sheriff's Office, via their Facebook page, there are three excellent locations from which to observe.
- Independence Monument View
- The end of Otto's Trail
- Grand View
Access To The Colorado National Monument
If you choose to attend, please remember the Colorado National Monument has an entrance fee of $25. If you have a Colorado National Monument annual pass or an America the Beautiful pass, they will be honored.
Where To Park
Don't get discouraged if the parking lots are full. Some spectators stay for only part of the climb. Parking spots will continually open up. It will most definitely be hot, and shade is scarce, so bring water. While you're at it, bring sunscreen.
So, aside from celebrating our nation's independence, what is the motivation behind the climb? Donations are welcome and encouraged. Proceeds from the event will be used to purchase equipment and provide training for the Mesa County Search and Rescue Team.
Then What?
So, when they get done with the climb, what happens to the flag? The American flag will remain in place atop Independence Monument for a week or so. If you can't be there for the climb, please make a trip to the site within the week for a chance to see the flag.
July 4 Will Be Toasty
The National Weather Service expects a high temp around 100 on Sunday, July 4. Be sure to bring water, sunscreen, a hat, whatever it takes. This event is not to be missed.
