Black Bear Pass is one of Colorado's most famous and dangerous off-road trails. If you're brave (or crazy) enough to take the trip, you'll be rewarded with some of the most beautiful views in the state.

This harrowing trip between Ouray and Telluride is not for the faint of heart.

First constructed in the late 1800s as access to Black Bear Mine, Black Bear Pass was considered treacherous by the gold and silver miners of the day.

Starting the journey at just over 11,000 feet at the summit of Red Mountain Pass between Silvertown and Ouray, the Jeep trail crests at 12,840 feet on top of Black Bear Pass. Traversing the mountain sides are the famous switchbacks that wind their way down to the town of Telluride.

Only open for a few months out of the year, Black Bear Road is only driven downhill except for the Jeep Jamboree where travel is reversed. You'll know you're on the right trail if you see the sign reading:

TELLURIDE ——
CITY OF GOLD
12 MILES - 2 HOURS
YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE
CRAZY TO DRIVE THIS
ROAD - BUT IT HELPS

JEEPS ONLY

If you don't have what it takes to drive the trail, watch the video above to see the dangers that await the brave.
