Four people have been arrested in connection with a string of auto thefts in Grand Junction.

In the last week, Grand Junction authorities received reports of four stolen vehicles - all from local gyms. In each case, the keys were taken from an unsecured locker and the license plates were swapped with plates taken from another vehicle.

One of the autos was tracked down using the car's GPS tracking system which alerted authorities the car was in the Clifton area. The car was located and was found to be displaying stolen license plates and two people were arrested. Surveillance footage from the gyms showed a subject who matched the description of one of the identified suspects.

Now, here's where things get interesting.

Wednesday afternoon, police tried to contact a couple of people in connection with a shoplifting investigation in the parking lot of 2464 highway 6 & 50. The two subjects took off in a white Kia Optima, which ended up being one of the stolen vehicles associated with the investigation into the string of auto thefts. The two individuals ended up abandoning the vehicle but were later apprehended after police set up a perimeter in the area.

These auto thefts serve as a reminder to gym rats everywhere to be sure and keep your valuables - including your car keys - locked up securely while you are working out at the gym. You can get a good, cheap padlock for less than five bucks. It's a good, worthwhile investment.
