There were almost 200 vehicles stolen in Grand Junction last year. Of those thefts, these five were the most common vehicles thieves prefer to steal.

The Grand Junction Police Department recently released its annual Reported Crime and Traffic Report which reported 194 vehicle thefts in 2016 an 18% increase from 2015.

Of the vehicles stolen, these makes and models were the top five choices for car thieves (in no particular order).

  1. Ford F150 Truck
  2. Honda Civic
  3. Honda Accord
  4. Jeep Grand Cherokee
  5. Toyota Corolla

Other interesting Grand Junction car theft facts;

  • Months most vehicles were stolen - July and October
  • Months least vehicles were stolen - April, May, and June
  • Number of stolen vehicles recovered - 146 (75% of total stolen)
  • Number of stolen vehicles unlocked or with keys inside - 34

The biggest auto theft surprise? On January 23, 2016, six vehicles were stolen. The kicker, all six were running and unattended. It's called 'puffing' and is illegal, which makes this fact even more insane.

To minimize the chance of having your car stolen, just follow these simple suggestions. Only drive in April, May, and June but not in any of the top five stolen vehicles. Keep your car locked at all times with the keys out of the vehicle, and never ever leave your car running unless you're in the driver's seat.
