The 2014 men’s Olympics hockey tournament got under way today in Sochi, Russia and the American men slammed Slovakia to kick things off. Team USA started slow but took over the game in the second period.

John Carlson got the scoring going in the first as the Americans took a one nothing lead into the first intermission. Then the floodgates opened up and team USA took total control.

The second period saw Slovakia score just: 24 seconds into the period and then team USA took over the game. The Americans scored six unanswered goals in the second to take a 7-1 lead. Paul Stastny scored twice and Ryan Kesler, Phil Kessel, David Backes and Dustin Brown all scored as team USA got 3 points to start the Olympic tournament.

Our boys will hit the ice again this Saturday morning as they take on the host country Russia. The classic Russian Vs. American game should be a great one so set you DVR’s if you don’t want to get up early Saturday morning. The game will air on NBC sports at 5am but there will be a rebroadcast later in the afternoon on Saturday.
