‘Wonder Woman’ Star Gal Gadot Says Her Solo Film Is ‘Pretty Dark’
Following the negative reactions to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the party line over at Warner Bros. right now seems to be “fun.” Studio executives and creatives have been assuring fans that, moving forward, their DC movies are going to be a bit lighter than Zack Snyder’s grim-and-gritty superhero epic. And while we’ve been told The Flash and Justice League movies will be fun, someone apparently didn’t get that memo for Wonder Woman.
Speaking with Digital Spy, Gadot says that there’s some levity to Wonder Woman, but that her origin story will be darker:
In Batman v Superman, you get a glimpse of who she is but not where she comes from. In Wonder Woman, this would be the first time we ever tell the coming-of-age story of how Diana becomes Wonder Woman. It’s very interesting. It has moments of humour, but it’s pretty dark.
Gadot goes on to explain how this version of Diana Prince will be different from the one we met in Batman v Superman — namely, she’s less experienced and a bit more naive about the world(s) around her:
We all saw before the beautiful coming of age of Batman, Spider-Man, Superman. We don’t know anything about Wonder Woman. We go back 100 years to when she’s more naïve. She’s this young idealist. She’s pure. Very different to the experienced, super-confident, grown-up woman you’ve seen.
That last part is certainly intriguing, and it’ll be fascinating to go back in time and see a Wonder Woman who is perhaps more optimistic and not as wise. WB recently released the first cast photo from the solo film, featuring Gadot’s Diana alongside fellow Amazonian badasses played by Robin Wright, Connie Nielsen and Force Majeure’s Lisa Loven Kongsli. That photo looked Fierce with a capital F, and while we totally expect some serious action and drama from Wonder Woman, here’s to hoping that it’s not all doom and gloom like Batman v Superman.
Directed by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman co-stars Chris Pine, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Ewen Bremner, Lucy Davis, Elena Anaya and Said Taghmaoui, and hits theaters on June 2, 2017.
