Western Colorado’s Dolores River Flowing In Rare Form
The next time you're around Gateway, Colorado, check out the Dolores River. Rarely will you see it flowing at its current level.
The video above was shot on Saturday, May 6, 2017. Every year on the first Saturday of May hundreds of Grand Junction residents gather at this location along the Dolores for an event called the Pig Out.
I've attended this event almost every year for the better part of 20 years. In that time, I've never seen the Dolores flowing at this rate. I see the river at the exact same time each year, the first Saturday in May. The water level and flow rate shocked everybody.
The Gateway Canyon portion of the Dolores offers excellent rafting conditions. I'm not an expert, so I can only imagine the quality of the rafting under present conditions.
To reach this location simply turn west at Gateway on 4 1/10 Road. You'll head down a dirt road for a few miles.
If you're a river enthusiast, pay a visit to Gateway or the surrounding area. The Dolores is in rare form. Take advantage of it.
