The weather is fantastic and the bikes are coming out just in time for Grand Valley Bike Month.

While there are plenty of things we can not do, in light of restrictions connected to the COVID-19 pandemic, there are a few things we can do and biking is one of them.

May is Grand Valley Bike Month, and Healthy Mesa County is encouraging residents to get out and bike and to participate in two special promotions, all while maintaining safe social distancing.

One special activity you can participate in is a selfie contest. Beginning May 4, there will be four bike-related theme weeks. Complete a bike activity related to the theme week, take a selfie, and submit your photo to Healthy Mesa County. Each week, two winners will be drawn randomly to receive a $20 gift card.

The second thing you can do if you are a bike enthusiast is playing Grand Valley Bike Month Bingo. You download a bingo card, complete the bike-related activities on the card and take a photo,  and try to get five in a row, make an X, or get a blackout, then send in your bingo board at the end of the month. There is a $100 prize for a blackout, two $50 dollar prizes for an X, and five $25 prizes for 5 in a row.

By the way, some regularly scheduled bike events have been moved to the fall due to the pandemic. Bike to School, Bike to Work, and the Commuter Challenge have all been postponed to later in the year.

Things do look a little different for bike month this year, but there's no reason why people on bikes can't get out and be active. As things slowly begin to open up, why not bike to your favorite shop or restaurant and help give our local economy a little boost.
