It's just days before the highway closes for the season.

The super-scenic stretch of road that is State Highway 5 to the top of Mount Evans will close on Tuesday, September 3rd. Like many higher-elevation roads in Colorado, it's opening was delayed because of this winter's record snowpack. Most years the road is open just before Memorial Day. Not this year. It wasn't until June 7th before the highway was finally cleared.

If you're thinking about a road trip over to Mount Evans, this weekend would be the time to go. Labor Day weekend is traditionally the busiest weekend of the year. The Colorado Department of Transportation says to expect delays of at least 30 minutes on Labor Day weekend. Also too, the highway has several switchbacks and is narrow in places. Keep both hands on the wheel and both eyes on the road.

The last 5 miles of Highway 5 to the top of Mount Evans is what's closing on September 3rd. The stretch from Echo Lake to Summit Lake will remain open until Monday, October 7th.
