Another Colorado High Elevation Highway Is Finally Open
Colorado Highway 5, better know at the Mount Evans Highway, is officially open.
It's one of the more scenic highways in the US. After you wind your way southwest out of Idaho Springs on highway 103 you can now catch highway 5 at Echo Lake Park and make your way to the top of Mt. Evans. The highway is the highest paved road in North America.
It's another of those roadways that's supposed to be open on Memorial Day weekend but this season's record snow has delayed its opening. Colorado Department of Transportation shared the news in a press release earlier today (Friday).
The US Forest Service manages the Mount Evans Recreation Area. This scenic alpine region hosts more than 150,000 visitors annually.
As you travel up you'll notice three developed sites are located along the highway. Mount Goliath Natural Area, the Nature Center, and the Summit of Mount Evans Interpretive Site are inside a National Forest. The third and owned by the City and County of Denver.
