Surviving the Great Grand Junction Colorado ‘Squall’ of 2021
Did you receive an emergency alert on your phone yesterday warning of a squall affecting the Grand Junction, Colorado area?
I was outdoors, in the middle of nowhere, when the alleged "squall" hit the valley. Is it just me, or did this emergency turn out to be something of a dud?
Grand Junction Colorado Barely Walked Away From That One
At precisely 1:41 p.m. on Sunday, December 26, my dumbphone went bonkers with a number of bells, whistles, and sirens indicating something profound was about to happen. The message warned of "...icy roads in heavy snow."
Two fascinating things came to my attention when this alert appeared. As indicated with the arrow at left, the National Weather Service had issued "Imminent severe alerts." Secondly, as indicated by the arrow on the right, a new money-saving coupon for a $6 Whopper Meal had arrived via my Burger King app.
Note the lead sentence on the alert. It reads, "Snow Squall Warning." According to Merriam-Webster, a squall is defined as:
squall
noun
- a sudden violent wind often with rain or snow
- a short-lived commotion
Personally, what I experienced would qualify as neither.
Not Exactly Swimming Weather, But Not Entirely Bad
When the disaster hit, I took the only appropriate action that came to mind. Put simply, I took the dogs for a walk. They love snow.
Damage Report Out of Grand Junction
After taking the dogs for a delightful stroll through the "squall" I have compiled a detailed damage report. To my knowledge, the cumulative damage from the great squall of December 2021 includes:
- my hair got messy
On The Scene Report
Here's a photo from the River Front Trail in Grand Junction during the event. This might make for a nice background on my computer screen.
It seems we dodged a bullet this time, Grand Junction. Obviously, being nonubiquitous, I wasn't everywhere in the valley at once. I have no idea how bad snowfall was at other points in the valley. From my perspective, the "squall" was a welcome sight.
