Today's Snow in Silverton, Colorado

At 11:59 a.m. Wednesday, February 23, 2022, an advisory at cotrip.org reads:

Travel Impact | US-550 Coal Bank, Molas, & Red Mtn Passes are closed.
US 550 is closed from milepost 53 to milepost 92 for safety concerns due to weather impacts and poor visibility. Coal Bank, Molas, and Red Mountain Passes have received 8-12 inches of snow with winds creating heavy blowing snow. This will be an extended closure. There is no estimate for reopening.

As of Wednesday morning at 7:30 AM, Coal Bank and Molas passes were also closed on US Highway 550, both of which are found between Silverton and Durango. With US Highway 550 closed in both directions from Silverton, this cuts off the mountain town to nearly all travelers.

According to outherecolorado.com, the closures mentioned above follow a spike in avalanche risk. As part of the avalanche risk mitigation effort, CDOT crews intentionally brought down a large avalanche onto US 550 between Ouray and Silverton.
