What's in your medicine cabinet?

If your medicine cabinet is anything like mine, it is full of prescription and over-the-counter drugs that are well-past the expiration date. In fact, my shelves are so full of stuff, I can't fit anything else in there right now. My guess is if I cleared out all the old drugs I'd have two completely empty shelves. I found one prescription bottle the other day with an expiration date of 2009. Are you kidding me??

Apparently, I haven't participated in a drug take-back day in a long, long time, but that is about to change.

Saturday, October 24 is National Rx Take Back Day. This is where you can dispose of expired and unneeded medicine safely and appropriately. I plan to be there with a bag full of drugs.

Why not just flush them down the toilet? Seems quick and easy, but, unfortunately, flushed drugs can have a negative impact on the environment. According to takebackyourdrugs.org,  studies have found that flushed medicines can contaminate lakes and streams, endanger wildlife, and end up in our drinking water.

While it's true, the Federal Drug Administration has a flush list for certain medications, disposing of unwanted drugs through a drug take-back programs is the safest and most responsible way to get rid of old medicine

The Grand Junction Fire Department is hosting a drug take-back event on Saturday, October 24 at the City Market on 24 Road from 10:00am-2:00pm. This is an opportunity to get rid of drugs safely that are expired or unneeded - and no questions asked.

We have a little bit of time before the event so maybe you could take some time this weekend to go through your medicine cabinets, check the dates, and get them ready for disposal on the 24th. That's exactly what I will be doing this weekend and I hope you will do the same.
