One of Colorado's more challenging roadways is an award winner.

At over 11,000 in elevation, Red Mountain Pass is one of Colorado’s more difficult and dangerous mountain passes. Especially in the winter months. The pass connects Silverton and Ouray. [It’s] infamous because of cliff drop-offs, no guardrails, but it’s also incredibly beautiful! It is so gorgeous!” says Kat Papenbrock, Executive Director of the Ouray Tourism Office.

I was just in Ouray a couple weeks ago. It's beautiful for sure. So much so it's commonly known as "The Million Dollar Highway" because of it's "million dollar" views. Perhaps not much this time of the year but according to CDOT an average of 2,100 drive highway 550 through Red Mountain Pass daily.

Now this beautiful and dangerous stretch of road has just been honored by the popular travel company, ‘Arrivalist’ as Colorado's "Most Visited Attraction." Turned out that the Million Dollar Highway was the big surprise for most visited attraction!” Papenbrock said. “We beat out the Denver Zoo, the Botanic Gardens, the Museum of Nature and Science and even Red Rocks”.

Other Colorado "Most Visited" winners: Casino- Lady Luck, Hotel & Resort- Hyatt Regency Denver, Luxury Hotel- The Broadmoor, Natural Attraction- Rocky Mountian National Park, Ski Resort- Breckenridge.

Next time you're in Ouray stop and see the award for yourself. It's on display at the visitor’s center.
