Breakups are never easy, especially when the relationship has been going on for some 17 years. But, the time comes when you just can't take it anymore and you have to bring it to a merciful end.

I have been traveling North Avenue every day for 17 years now, but that's all coming to an end. The road is getting worse and worse. There are other ways to get from point A to point B and I'm ready for a new way.

I would like to know if there is a main road in Grand Junction that's rougher than North Avenue? If there is, please let me know because I would like to drive it because maybe it would make me feel better about bouncing down North.

There is a classic rock and roll hit from the 50s by Bill Haley and His Comets called Shake, Rattle, and Roll. That's exactly what it feels like every time I'm on North Avenue and I'm tired of shaking, rattling, and bouncing down the road.

The way I see it, here's what's happening. The utility crews that tear up the road at night to fix or replace sewer lines, water lines, or any other kind of line apparently are not all that skilled at repairing a road. They rip up the road to do the necessary work, but when they patch the street after the work,  it is nowhere near the condition it was before they started. Don't get me wrong. I'm not expecting perfection from these crews when it comes to putting the street back together, but, surely they could do a better job. Couldn't they?

I've never done road work before and maybe it's a lot more difficult than it looks to patch a broken up road with asphalt. Perhaps I should be thankful that the road is paved, but, I have to tell you, I have been on plenty of dirt roads that are smoother than North Avenue.

It's gotten to the point where I start to feel irritated every time I have to drive on North Avenue, especially the eastern half. Now I've gotten to the point of having that irritating feeling and having my poor, old truck beaten, shaken, and rattled without mercy. It's time for action.

There are other ways for me to get home other than North Avenue. Those other ways might take me longer, but my truck will feel safer and my peace of mind will be restored. I feel like I will be a happier person.  A few extra minutes on the road will be worth it.

I feel bad for the businesses along North Avenue, whose customers have to deal with this horrible road. And now that I'm leaving North Avenue, who knows when I will see these businesses again.

is there a solution to this problem? Am I the only person in the Grand Valley who hates driving on North Avenue? If I am, I will shut my pie hole, keep my opinion to myself, and remain silent from here on out.

My North Avenue rant may not make this major Grand Junction thoroughfare any smoother, but just getting this off my chest makes me feel tons better. I haven't decided for sure on my new route, but, I'm pretty sure the ride is going to be a whole lot better. Say goodbye to shake, rattle, and roll and hello Mr. Smooth.
