A change in Colorado's license plate color scheme could be coming next year when the state legislature could be voting on the issue. The draft of a bill was advanced this week that would take Colorado back some 20 years to when the plates featured dark green mountains with a white sky and white lettering. The current color scheme is white mountains with dark green letters.

There are various reasons for making the change, and at least one of them makes sense. The color scheme of current license plates fades quickly, and over time becomes difficult to read and that is not a good thing. My wife recently was stopped by a cop because of how weathered our license plate is on the car. I think it's about 6 years old and it's fairly hard to read.

I guess the question I have is this. Why do Colorado plates have to be green? It's just my personal opinion, but I have always thought the standard Colorado plate was ugly. There's just something about the dark green that is not very appealing. Have you ever noticed how nice Colorado's specialty plates look? Why can't the standard plates be that attractive?

We all know the song America the Beautiful was inspired by Pike's Peak, and you know the words....."For purple mountain majesties above the fruited plain." Wouldn't it make sense to make the mountains on Colorado's license plates some shade of purple instead of green? And couldn't we make them look more like mountains and less like ink blots?

I see other states' license plates and often wonder why can't Colorado have an attractive plate like that one? Surely we can do better.

We'll know in a few months if our license plate is changing, and I'm not sure the change will be any better than what we've got. And I'm pretty sure they aren't going to go for my idea of purple mountains, but I've got to at least put the idea out there.
