Have you had a chance to visit Western Colorado's Cimarron River? If you're making the drive from Montrose to Gunnison, take a moment to check it out.

This last weekend's adventures included a trip up to Arrowhead Mountain Lodge, just a little southeast of Cimarron, Colorado. Along the way, we always stop at the little rest area just about a mile outside of Cimarron.

According to Wikipedia, "The Cimarron River is a 22.0-mile-long (35.4 km)[2] tributary that joins the Gunnison River in Curecanti National Recreation Area near Cimarron, Colorado. The river's source is the confluence of two forks near Silver Jack Reservoir in the Uncompahgre National Forest.

Check out the video at the top. My traveling companions, both fishing enthusiasts, are convinced the calm area just past the rock in the center of the river marks a perfect spot to catch a fish. I haven't fished in 40 years, so I haven't a clue. The website diyflyfishing.com says:

Anyone who has fished the Cimarron will tell you that not only is it teeming with rainbows and cutthroat, but it is also a prime example of easily accessible fisheries that offer the quiet solitude of the wild.

The next time you're traveling Highway 50 between Montrose and Gunnison, catch the rest area right next to the town of Cimarron. It's a long stretch of road between the two towns, and the rest area is one of the few chances you'll have to tinkle. While there, enjoy a few moments along the river.
