High Water Forces Closure Of Portions Of Riverfront Trail
Grand Junction Parks and Recreation designate a portion of trail 'unsafe.'
The high and fast-moving Colorado River is washing away portions of the Blue Heron section of Riverfront Trail. The erosion is washing away the earth around and under the cement weakening the path. Currently, a section is extending over the river without support.
Apparently, the high water is exposing, quite literally, an on-going issue with this section of the trail. For nearly 15 years the trail has needed attention. The raging Colorado River has made a bad situation worse. Grand Junction Parks & Recreation suggest that walkers, runners, and bikers use Riverside Parkway to work around the closed portion of the trail.
The city suggests it may be later this summer before repairs are made and the trail passable. Anticipate the barriers to stay up through the end of August.
