Grand Junction's Market on Main --the downtown farmers market-- has been canceled tonight (August 20) due to air quality concerns.

Downtown Grand Junction posted to their Facebook page at 12:20 p.m., stating the popular farmers market was canceled. Today would have been the first market held on  Main Street this year. The farmers market was temporarily held at the Two Rivers Convention Center parking lot due to attendance restrictions from COVID.

The wildfires burning in the area is lowering the air quality in the Valley region. Currently, Meas County Public Health says the air quality is "unhealthy for sensitive groups." This includes the elderly, children, and people with heart and lung disease.

The EPA gives the following recommendations when the air quality affects sensitive groups:

  • Keep doors and windows closed, seal large gaps as much as possible. Avoid exhaust fans.
  • Outside activities can continue, but should only be for short periods of time. For longer activities such as athletic practice, take more breaks and do less intense activities.
  • Watch for symptoms (coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing, and chest tightness) and take action as needed.
  • Keep doors and windows closed, seal large gaps as much as possible.

Currently, the Pine Gulch Fire is burning 18 miles north of Grand Junction, with smoke and ash settling in the area.
