This one hits home for me. Payless ShoeSource just announced the closing of nearly 400 stores nationwide. The company is based in Topeka, KS. The city of my previous radio employment.

Payless had a large presence in the Topeka market. The company donated shoes to several local and regional charities. The company announced Thursday the Topeka office would lay off 110 employees. That's sad news, but not for Grand Junction. Of the 378 stores closing, the Junction stores aren't on the list.

Payless is hoping closing the unprofitable locations will help the company make a comeback. The company will file for bankruptcy protection. The store closings will impact nearly 2,000 employees.

Three stores in Colorado will be closing their doors. Those are in Sterling, Lakewood, and Northglenn. There may be future closings. But for now the stores here in Grand Junction, on North Ave and inside the Mesa Mall, will remain open.
